six-pack debate by any stretch. there weren't a lot of bright spots for the president. this was romney's night. everyone on both side saying that. one effective thing the president did, pointed out romney is still short on details on a few key things, health care plan, his tax care plan, as well as as frank-dodd. did he score any points as far as romney being a blank canvas? >> there were a few vulnerabilities when you talked about entitlements, tax plans, he has to square these numbers. he dug himself some holes, that the obama campaign can dig him into even more. it's going to be difficult for him to square those things in a future debate. i think there is possible areas of opportunity there. this was not something that even the most dedicated partisans can paint as a good night for president obama. >> you know it's a bad night if opinions are that uniform, huh? >> exactly. the next presidential debate, tuesday, october 16th. >> thank you, rick. >> thanks. >> thank you, guys. >>> our coverage of the debate does not end here. we'll take you live to denver, during "america this morning

in the polls. he can keep trying to shift the debate toward those romney weaknesses. in particular, the sense he's out of touch with the middle class. you'll hear the number 47 as often as obama can get it into the debate. >> you think he can come off as aloof. when you look at the polls, the one thing he's consistently exceeded mitt romney at is likability. >> right. yet he does have -- it's partly it's proffesorial. when he looks like john kennedy he's on an upslope. he's not so good when he thinks he is way ahead and konts respect an opponent. i have a hunch he is hearing that from his folks in that room in nevada saying, you can't make a mistake like that. >> part of it is who you compare him to. he's aloof compared to bill clinton. bill clinton has a touch. >> everyone is aloof compared to bill clinton. >> exactly. >> let's talk about mitt romney. strengths, weakness. >> mitt romney's strength is that he is, comes across as competent, as a capable human being. as somebody who projects an air of authority, especially when he talks about the economy. that is the private sector track record

rallied just yesterday. >>> and with one presidential debate behind them, mitt romney is already gearing up for the next face-off with president barack obama. mr. romney held a rally in virginia yesterday and today in florida, preparing for the next debate hosted by our own candy crowley. romney will also hold a rally in maryland tonight. >>> now to the new employment report. the labor department saying 114,000 jobs were created in september. and the unemployment rate fell, coming in at 7.8%. that's a drop of .3% from august. health care gave us the biggest boost in new jobs. transportation had a good month as well, with a 17,000 job gain. >> with only a month away now to the election, the big drop in unemployment has critics suggesting that the numbers may have been manipulated. we look at how the numbers are put together to find out if that's even possible. >> there are a couple things at play here. first, it's from 8.1% to 7.8%. i say forget it, erase it from your head. it doesn't matter. the thing you have to concentrate on is the number of jobs created. 114,000 is right around where

the stakes for the romney campaign ahead of wednesday's debate. right now expectations are with the president. 55% of likely voters expect him to win the debate. in preparation for the match-up, the president is hunkered down with his aides in nevada, romney spent the weekend practicing in boston. both sides looking to play the role of underdog in the debate, downplaying expectations and talking up the opponent, but not chris christie who spoke yesterday on "meet the press" about his confidence on the republican candidate. >> the general public i speak to in new jersey and elsewhere are just beginning to tune in to this race. they will tune in on wednesday night. when they do governor romney will lay out his vision for a better and greater america for greater opportunity for all of our citizens. i think that's when you will see this race start to tighten and then move in governor romney's direction. come thursday morning, the entire narrative of the race will change. >> congressman paul ryan was pressed to explain the republican approach to tax policy during an interview yesterday. >> you're

on the economy, some are saying romney should have a major foreign policy speech days after the debate. over the weekend, the white house was on the defensive after the friday's announcement that the deadly assault on the u.s. consulate in bengahzi was deliberate and organized. peter king of new york called on susan rice to resign as u.s. ambassador to the united nations after she initially claimed the attack on the consulate was part of the spontaneous protest after an anti-islamic video. yesterday paul ryan and john mccain slammed the administration's handling of the deadly attack. >> the response was slow, confused, inconsistent. they first said it was a youtube video and a spontaneous mob. we now know it was a planned terrorist attack if this was one tragic incident that would be a tragedy in itself. the problem is it's part of a bigger picture that the obama foreign policy is unraveling before our eyes on tv screens. >> i think it interferes with the depiction that the administration is trying to convey that al qaeda is on the wane, everything is fine in the middle east. >> you think it

underwhelming performance in wednesday' debate. and bad news for mitt romney, and his conspiracy-minded supporters on the republican right. more on that in a moment. according to the bureau of labor statistics, unemployment dropped to 7.8% last month down .3 of a percent since august. employers added 114,000 new jobs. including 104 in the private sector and 10,000 in the public sector which had seen months of steady decline. in july's number revised to 181,000 with an additional 40,000 new jobs. president obama shared the news with a cheering crowd at a campaign appearance in fairfax virginia. >> obama: this morning we found out that the unemployment rate had fallen to its lowest level since i office. but today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> eliot: not if you're mitt romney. the g.o.p. contender talked down the jobs numbers and the economy at an abingdon, virginia, rally. >> romney: there were fewer new jobs created this month than last month

as romney explained very clearly in the debate the other night, no, i am not cutting taxes on the richest. what i want to do is lower rates overall by 20%. and eliminate loopholes, deductions, exemptions, that sort of thing. which i think all serious people who look at the tax code think needs to be done. it's the richest of all by the way who take the most advantage of tax deductions. that is a fairer way of looking at t maybe if you have a lot of deductions you don't want to get rid of them. but you always feel like with reductions, somebody else is getting a better deal than you are. mitt romney hasn't specified which deductions. i can think of a few we should get rid of like deductions for state and local taxes. why should the rest of the country be supporting the high tax rates of california and new york? but anyway, that's my position, not mitt romney's and he also explained in the debate, this is my general proposal. we'll argue about it. we'll talk about it. i'll take it to the democrats and we'll work it out. but even the tax policy center that claims this would be a $5 trillion

-- the mitt romney campaign in particular has said in the last few days that during the debates, they will fact check lies. in which sometimes can mean saying something is not true when it is true or sang something is true when it is not true. i think that because the speed has increased, there is a lot more for reporters to do. about money issues and spending in keeping an eye on that. i think there are some great works being done tracking spending but there's also a lot more money on the table because it is citizens united. that is a real challenge. in some ways to bring the optimism and pessimism together about this, i think this might be the election cycle where both sides, it has become clear what the tool or for both sides. there is money, there is media access, there is social media. there are ways to quickly get information out and really ask questions. in the last few weeks before people vote, we are going to see how well each side uses those tools. although i do not know we will fully realize that until the next election cycle. until the next election cycle. when i tal
